German WWII Gun Shelter – Atlantic Wall

The Regelbau 672, officially designated Geschützunterstellraum I ohne Nebenräume, was a standardized German gun shelter used as part of the Atlantic Wall defensive system during World War II.

Its purpose was to provide protected storage for artillery pieces between deployments. The guns were moved outside to prepared firing positions when required.

Historical Background

The Regelbau 672 supported defensive positions where accommodation for the gun crews and ammunition storage were provided separately.

This arrangement allowed the shelter, crew quarters and ammunition bunkers to be distributed across a fortified position.

Design and Construction

The bunker consisted primarily of a gun storage chamber, without separate accommodation rooms.

Its reinforced concrete construction protected the weapons while they were stored inside. A wide entrance allowed guns to be moved between the shelter and nearby firing positions.

Armament and Operational Use

The Regelbau 672 had no single prescribed main weapon. It could shelter different types of artillery, depending on their size and the requirements of the position.

The guns were stored inside for protection and deployed outside for firing.
