German WWII 5 cm Gun Casemate – Atlantic Wall
The Regelbau 667, officially designated Kleinstschartenstand für 5 cm KwK, was a compact German gun casemate used along the Atlantic Wall during World War II.
Designed for a permanently installed 5 cm tank gun, this reinforced concrete bunker provided a protected firing position for close-range coastal and anti-tank defence.
Historical Background
The Regelbau 667 formed part of Germany’s programme of standardized coastal fortifications.
Its compact layout provided a relatively economical way to protect a gun and its crew during combat. Positioned for flanking fire, these bunkers could cover beaches, approaches and defensive obstacles.
Design and Construction
The bunker’s layout centred on a small gun chamber with a firing embrasure and a protected entrance.
Reinforced concrete surrounded the fighting compartment, while the embrasure allowed the gun to engage targets within its assigned sector.
The design focused on the weapon position rather than providing the extensive accommodation and facilities found in larger bunkers.
Armament and Operational Use
The Regelbau 667 was designed for a 5 cm KwK mounted on a fixed pedestal.
Both the short-barrelled 5 cm KwK L/42 and the longer 5 cm KwK L/60 were used in this type of position.
The gun fired through the embrasure to engage targets approaching or crossing the defended area.
