Recreate a German heavy anti-aircraft position with this 1/35 scale L 401 model from Helmuth’s Strongholds.

The L 401 combined an open gun emplacement with protected rooms beneath it. Designed for an 8.8 cm or 10.5 cm Flak gun, it offers an impressive centrepiece for a WWII air-defence diorama.

Historical Background

Heavy anti-aircraft batteries formed an important part of Germany’s wartime defences, protecting ports, military installations and other strategic locations.

The L 401 brought the gun position, crew accommodation and ammunition storage together in one structure.

Design and Construction

An open, octagonal gun emplacement stood above the bunker. Beneath it were protected accommodation and ammunition storage rooms.

The original L 401 had two entrances approached from a sunken access area. Unlike the related L 401a, its entrances lacked dedicated entrance-defence firing positions.

This combination of an exposed weapon position and sheltered rooms gives the model opportunities for both exterior and interior scenes, depending on the version selected.

Armament and Operational Use

The emplacement was designed for an 8.8 cm or 10.5 cm anti-aircraft gun.

The open position allowed the weapon to engage aerial targets, while the bunker below provided shelter and storage for the battery’s personnel and ammunition.
