35-015 Dutch S3 Kazemat – 1/35 Scale
Dutch WWII Machine-Gun Casemate – May 1940
Recreate a Dutch defensive position with this 1/35 scale S3 kazemat from Helmuth’s Strongholds.
The S3 was a compact reinforced concrete machine-gun casemate built as part of the Netherlands’ preparations for war. Its distinctive shape and three firing openings make it a recognisable feature of Dutch military history.
Historical Background
S3 kazematten were constructed during the Dutch mobilisation of 1939–1940. They formed part of defensive positions in locations including the Grebbe Line.
Often nicknamed “Stekelvarken” — porcupine — these structures featured projecting iron hooks for attaching camouflage material.
Design and Construction
The S3 provided a protected fighting compartment with three firing openings facing different directions.
These openings allowed the crew to select the most suitable field of fire. The unused openings could be closed with steel shutters.
The compact structure could be incorporated into embankments and surrounding terrain, with camouflage helping it blend into the landscape.
Armament and Operational Use
Despite having three firing openings, the standard S3 was intended for one light machine gun, typically the Lewis M.20.
The weapon was positioned at the opening needed to cover the assigned sector. The kazemat provided a position for frontal or flanking machine-gun fire.
