Recreate one of the most iconic German defensive positions of World War II with this detailed 1/35 scale ceramic model from Helmuth's Strongholds.
The Tobruk Bauform 58c, also known as the Vf 58c Ringstand, was one of the most widely used German defensive structures along the Atlantic Wall.
Designed as a compact, reinforced concrete fighting position, the Tobruk provided protection for infantry soldiers while allowing them to defend surrounding terrain with machine guns or other light weapons.
Its characteristic octagonal opening and partially underground construction made it a distinctive feature of German coastal defences.
Historical Background
During World War II, German forces constructed thousands of Tobruk positions throughout occupied Europe.
These small defensive bunkers were frequently positioned near larger fortifications, coastal batteries, roads, bridges and strategic installations.
The Bauform 58c was particularly suitable for close-range defence and observation.
Its compact design allowed it to be constructed relatively quickly and incorporated into larger defensive networks.
The upper fighting position featured an octagonal opening approximately 80 cm wide, providing the soldier with an extensive field of observation and fire.
Below the opening was a protected compartment that provided shelter and access to the fighting position.
Armament
The Tobruk 58c was commonly equipped with German machine guns such as the MG34 or MG42.
Depending on its intended function, the position could also be used for observation or accommodate a light mortar.
Machine guns could be mounted using a specially designed support, allowing the weapon to be positioned and operated from the open fighting compartment.
The compact construction made the Tobruk particularly useful for defending the approaches to larger bunkers and fortified positions.
Diorama Possibilities
The Tobruk 58c is particularly suitable for creating detailed Atlantic Wall and Normandy invasion dioramas.
Its compact dimensions make it easy to incorporate into larger defensive positions alongside other German bunkers, trenches, anti-tank obstacles and military vehicles.
Add realistic concrete weathering, sand, vegetation and camouflage to create an authentic World War II defensive position.
